Melissa Rosenberg got her career as Scriptwriter by mistaken identity

Melissa Rosenberg has been on a seven-day-a-week work schedule for two years now, a time crunch about which she has no complaints. The executive producer of “Dexter,” whose fourth Showtime season premieres Sunday, is also writing the third “Twilight” movie, after finishing her script for the second film, “New Moon,” in time for its Nov. 20 release. Her screenplay for the original “Twilight” helped turn the then-obscure series of novels into a runaway smash hit for Summit Entertainment.

Rosenberg spoke with Eric Estrin about kismet, misguided nepotism and the easiest job she ever got.

I went to USC’s Stark Program for producing, knowing that what I wanted to do was write but feeling like if I got some producing chops behind me as well, I would probably be pushed around a little bit less.

While I was at USC I was also spec’ing material, and I spec’ed a feature. So I thought, I have to get this feature to someone; I need an agent. So I found that in the list of alumni of the Stark program were four people who happened also to go to my undergraduate, Bennington College.

This was strikingly unusual because Bennington has a very small student body, and the Stark program graduates only 25 a year. So it was very odd that from these two very small schools, four people had crossed over.

One of them was Liz Glotzer, who was and is an executive at Castle Rock. So I contacted Liz, never having met her before, and I said, I’m an alumna from Bennington and Stark; would you read my material? She agreed to read it, and then I met with her. She said, I love this; we’re not gonna make it but let me help you get an agent.

Then “Misery” was opening and she got even busier than usual and completely dropped the ball. But her assistant called and said, Look, I read it too and I love it, and I know we’re not gonna make it but let me help you get an agent.

So her assistant calls some producer she knows and she sends it to someone from her office for coverage -- I cannot remember the woman’s name -- and I meet with her, and she says, I love this; we’re not gonna make it, but let me help you get an agent. So then finally that woman sends it to like four or five of her favorite boutique agents, and I call them to say I’m going to send the script, and before I’m even able to send it, they’re going, Get me that script, get it to me right away, I need you to send it this weekend, hurry, hurry!

I’m like, Wow, what did she tell them? This is fantastic! I send them the script, and then I go in to meet with one of them. Everyone in the agency wants to meet with me, and I’m going, This is amazing.

'Twilight Saga' makes at No. 2 of the Extra's Entertainer of the Year 2010

The ultimate love triangle between vampire, werewolf and human! "The Twilight Saga" cast flies in at No. 2 on "Extra's" Entertainer of the Year list.

Stephenie Meyer's bestselling novels -- about a girl named Bella Swan who falls in love with vampire Edward Cullen, while also forging a close friendship with werewolf Jacob Black -- made the tween set (and their mothers) swoon, launching a literary phenomenon in 2005 on a par with "Harry Potter."

And then came the films. When the first "Twilight" movie was released in 2008, young stars Kristen Stewart ("Bella") and Robert Pattinson ("Edward") were catapulted into teen idol-dom, with hunky Taylor Lautner ("Jacob") following their path in "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" in 2009.

This past summer, the third film, "Eclipse," opened to huge numbers, grossing over $300 million domestically. The highly anticipated fourth book, "Breaking Dawn," will now be made into two movies, to be released in 2011 and 2012.

Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows fell at No. 3 behind the Twilight with its midnight screenings

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” made $24 million in its debut during the wee hours Friday, enough to pull into third place among films with midnight screenings, according to figures from box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

“Deathly Hallows” fell behind two films in the “Twilight” series. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” still is tops with its $30 million-plus debut earlier this year on June 30. And “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” comes in second at $26.3 million for its Nov. 20, 2009 midnight release.

But “Deathly Hallows” is ahead of the last film in the series, fourth-place “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which made $22.2 million during its midnight run in July 2009. And “Deathly Hallows” is well ahead of fifth-place The Dark Knight,” another film from Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. studios, which made $18.5 million in its July 2008 midnight screenings.

'Twilight' Actress Christian Serratos Lands Lead Role In ABC Family Series

"Twilight"'s own Christian Serratos, who plays Bella's bespectacled bud Angela, has just landed a lead role in the new as-yet-untitled Brenda Hampton pilot on ABC Family.

Deadline broke the news that Christian was cast along with Katelyn Tarver ("Big Time Rush"), Valerie Tian ("Juno") and Ana Lucasey ("Lie to Me") in the hour-long drama that follows four ethnically diverse teen girls attending a private school in California. (We handicapped the series' prospects last month.)

Of all the fresh faces to emerge from the "Twilight" franchise, Christian seems to be the one who's flown the most under casting directors' radars. In addition to the "Breaking Dawn," Christian has only one other movie in the movie in the works, 2011's "96 Minutes.

Twilight actress Anna Kendrick Supports Anti-Bullying Campaign

Ashley Greene Profiled in Gotham Magazine

When Twilight actress Ashley Greene moved to Los Angeles at age 17, she worked in restaurants to pay her rent. Now brands like Mark are signing her for big-time contracts, and People magazine has dubbed her one of the year’s most beautiful people; all the while, directors are lining up to cast her.

Greene recently wrapped up work on Butter, the tale of a Midwestern woman (played by Jennifer Garner) trying to win a local butter-carving contest. “It was the first comedy I’ve ever done, so I was equally terrified and excited,” says Greene. “Plus I was working with Jennifer Garner, who I could just sit and watch all day long.”

Garner is the kind of actress that Greene wants to emulate: one who straddles action and comedy in her professional life and maintain a grounded personal life at least somewhat out of the public eye. As for her own celebrity status, Greene understands it’s something that has to be taken seriously in a world where girls want to emulate the young women they see on the big screen. “I definitely try to be a positive role model,” she says. “Right now my fans seem to be growing with me. I want my fans to know that Twilight has given me an incredible opportunity, but this is all still new and exciting for me."
