'Potter,' 'Pirates,' 'Twilight' Lead Big Film Year of 2011

A momentous finale lies ahead for Hollywood this year. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" is the biggest screen farewell since the final "Star Wars" movie, closing out a decade of adventures for the young wizard.


Then there's that vampire-werewolf-schoolgirl love triangle. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1" is the next-to-last installment in that series, with the finale due out in 2012.


As those franchises wind down, others are recharging. The original "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy sailed into the sunset, but a new voyage now looms. The "Shrek" series has finished, but feline hero Puss in Boots sets out on his own in a spinoff.


And plenty of other big-screen regulars are coming back throughout 2011.


The holiday season brings part one of "Breaking Dawn," the finale to author Stephenie Meyer's supernatural romance that began with "Twilight." Kristen Stewart's back for the closing round in her torn-between-two-lovers relationship with her vampire beau (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf pal (Taylor Lautner).

Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows fell at No. 3 behind the Twilight with its midnight screenings

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” made $24 million in its debut during the wee hours Friday, enough to pull into third place among films with midnight screenings, according to figures from box-office tracker Hollywood.com.


“Deathly Hallows” fell behind two films in the “Twilight” series. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” still is tops with its $30 million-plus debut earlier this year on June 30. And “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” comes in second at $26.3 million for its Nov. 20, 2009 midnight release.


But “Deathly Hallows” is ahead of the last film in the series, fourth-place “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which made $22.2 million during its midnight run in July 2009. And “Deathly Hallows” is well ahead of fifth-place The Dark Knight,” another film from Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. studios, which made $18.5 million in its July 2008 midnight screenings.

'Twilight' and 'Harry Potter' are both fantasy books-turned-movies, and they've shared one actor in the form of Mr. Pattinson (who played Cedric in 'Potter' and now plays Edward in 'Twilight'). They have also both achieved cult-like devotion from their rabid fans.

Before the next 'Potter' film comes out on Nov. 19, we're curious to see which movie (and book) series' fans have the strongest base.

'Harry Potter' star Daniel Radcliffe to play vampire on 'The Simpsons'

The Simpsons will be taking on The Twilight Saga in their annual "Treehouse of Horror" Halloween episode and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will be voicing a vampire named Edmund.

Fans can see a glimpse of what Radcliffe's character, a vampire named Edmund, will look like in art released by Fox (seen right).
In "Tweenlight," which is a short in the episode, Lisa Simpson falls for the new vampire student.

“Daniel was very excited to do The Simpsons,” exec producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly in November 2009, “We kept trying to ask him for secrets from the upcoming Harry Potter movie until we realized that they were all in the books.”

Unlike vampires, it looks like Edmund's romance with Lisa won't be eternal. According to the episode synopsis, "When a romance blossoms, the young lovers run away to Dracula-la Land, leaving Homer (Dan Castellaneta) to come to Lisa’s rescue."

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series broke Harry Potter records

According to USA Today Twilight series eclipses Potter records on Best-Selling list:

Stephenie Meyer's four-book Twilight series has sunk its fangs into USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list — with no signs of letting go. Meyer's domination of the list for the past 12 months has smashed records that until now had belonged to J.K. Rowling.

Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the teen-vampire romance series, entered the list at No. 1 on Aug. 2, 2008. Its sales and those of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books, have remained staggering.

This week, Meyer's novels are Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on USA TODAY's list.

Rowling, overall, has sold more books than Meyer — her seven-book series about boy wizard Harry Potter has 143 million copies in print in the USA, while Meyer has sold 40 million copies of her four books. But Rowling can't match Meyer's control of the list.

Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the two authors' fourth installments, entered the list at No. 1, but Meyer's series has had more staying power.

Harry Potter star 'Tom Felton' to play as Riley in Twilight Saga:Eclipse movie

Hollywood crush has an article about the Tom Felton playing as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter might be cast as Riley in Twilight third movie Eclipse.

Maybe its his boyish good looks, his charming smile or his perfectly mastered snarl, but there's something about Tom Felton that makes us want more. The "Harry Potter" star is sure to wow audiences with his tortured portrayal of Draco Malfoy in tomorrow's (!) "Half-Blood Prince" and maybe even earn some Oscar buzz now that the Academy Awards have opened themselves up to 10 nominees.

But, there is a different sort of buzz going on from a fan circuit often found opposing "Harry Potter": "Twilight" fans are clamoring for Tom to play Victoria's lackey Riley in 2010's "Eclipse."

Tom isn't the first guy "Twilight" fans have latched onto for the role. First Melissa Rosenberg, screenplay scribe for "The Twilight Saga," threw a curveball when she told E! News she pictured Channing Tatum as Riley in the epic battle at the end of "Eclipse." Then, Evil Iguana Productions fans rampaged the comments section of the article begging for Craig Deering to be cast as the role of Riley. Tom is one in a long line of fan-favorites to play the role, but he is quickly becoming the most popular.

"Ill be ready when they want me! Really, I'm only joking. Im not really sure at this point; but you will be the first to know if I find out anything!" Tom told his fansite, Feltbeats.com. He reiterated the sentiment on his Twitter, saying, "i keep getting asked if im being cast as Riley in Twilight! Ill let you all know if so!!!"

If Tom does make the cut, he will join Robert Pattinson as the second actor to make the jump between series, though newcomer Jamie Campbell Bower is also going to be joining the fray as Caius in "New Moon" and Gellert Grindelwald in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" Part 1 and 2.

E! caught up an interview on Billy Burke and answers some of the rumours spreading about Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

Billy Burke, at the Angels & Aces Poker party at the Playboy Mansion, and he gave us the inside scoop on all these nasty rumors, which he's more than happy to not be a part of:

So Kristen was reportedly pregnant, which we cleared up and showed to be totally false.

Rob is probably pregnant with my child. It's funny no one picked up on me and Rob's affair.

Do you wish you were more involved in rumors like your younger costars?

I don't feel left out at all. They can keep me out of those rumors as much as they want.

How do you think Rob's handling all this attention? He seems stressed out on the set of his new movie, Remember Me... Think R.Pattz would ever get totally fed up with it and quit acting altogether?

You mean pulling a Joaquin Phoenix? I doubt he would go that route. He's got a lot of talent. He's got his art, as opposed to being bogged down by all this bulls--t. I think he's handling it well. I feel a little bit for [Rob and Kristen]. I think [the attention] was unexpected by both of them.

Do you sometimes feel like a spokesperson for Rob, Kristen and the other castmembers' personal lives?

Some people do ask, but they know the answer they're gonna get: I don't know anything.

OK then, how will the next few Twilight films be different?

Haven't seen a script yet, have no idea what's going on. Nobody's seen a script yet.

Twi fans want more sex and violence with their beloved vamps. Blame True Blood. Think any of the upcoming movies will ever be R-rated?

I doubt it. I doubt they'll go that far. Stephanie [Meyer]'s books are what they are, and to go beyond that is gonna be a misconception of what the actual text is.

We know Robsten & Co. are hotter than the Harry Potter kids, but will the boy wizard beat out New Moon at the box office?

We took their release spot the last couple years, and we're taking their summer release spot next year. I don't get into competition. I just want the movies to be good.

What if there's a Harry Potter/Twilight crossover? How much would that make?

What do you mean, that they meet? Harry battles Edward? I doubt it. That would be a complete bastardization of what's going on!

Twilight and Harry Potter: Rival Teen Franchise?

The Wall Street Journal has an article comparing the two movie franchise, Twilight and Harry Potter, both adapted from best selling books. It's marketing strategy, target audience and if there is rival between the two movies.

Hollywood marketing executives say that these days the “Twilight” franchise has influenced almost every studio marketing campaign that targets teenage girls. Some posters for the upcoming “Potter” film echo “Twilight”’s emphasis on romance. One features Harry and his crush, Ginny, gazing longingly into each others’ eyes, in a pose reminiscent of “Twilight”’s now-iconic image of its star-crossed lovers, Bella and Edward. Another shows Harry’s friend Ron with his girlfriend Lavender, while a jealous Hermione scowls in the background.

Warner Bros. and the team behind “Potter” say they didn’t take the “Twilight” franchise into account when designing their marketing materials for “The Half-Blood Prince.” Instead, they crafted a campaign aimed to resonate with previous “Potter” films, the executives and filmmakers say, dismissing the notion that there is a rivalry between the franchises among fans.

“With all due respect to “Twilight,” the longevity and world-wide success of the Harry Potter franchise speaks for itself,” a studio representative said.

The previous five “Potter” films have grossed almost $4.5 billion in world-wide box-office revenue, making the franchise one of the biggest in history. J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books have sold more than 400 million copies world-wide, compared with 53 million for Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series. But after 10 years on the New York Times best-seller list, the “Potter” books fell off the children’s-series list last May, and since then have returned only intermittently. Meanwhile, the “Twilight” books have spent 100 weeks on the chart.

Both David Yates, who directed “The Half-Blood Prince,” and David Heyman, the franchise’s longtime producer, say they’ve never seen “Twilight,” and say they deliberately avoided thinking about other franchises when making the “Potter“series. “We live in a bit of a bubble,” said Mr. Heyman, who read the first “Potter” book before it was published in 1997 and immediately had Warner Bros. option the rights. Mr. Yates, who will also direct the final two installments, adds: “J.K. Rowling has given us such a rich and dynamic world that I can’t really look over my shoulder and worry about other teen stories.”

Warner Bros. says the “Potter” movies have become more grown-up in order to follow the narrative of the books and to appeal to an audience that’s getting older. Nearly a decade has elapsed since the “Potter” producers cast an 11-year-old Daniel Radcliffe in the pivotal role of Harry. “As the characters and storylines of the Harry Potter films have matured, our marketing materials have followed suit,” says a studio representative. (A 2006 survey found that the average age kids started reading the series was 9 and that nearly 60% of kids aged 9 to 11 had read it.)

The new “Harry Potter” film, which opens July 15, focuses heavily on the romantic entanglements that mark the entry into adulthood, and features some dark moments—including the death of a major character—that make it more sophisticated than some of the previous movies. The film begins with Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts, when he discovers an old book of potions marked as property of a mysterious “Half-Blood Prince.” Harry delves into that book and, through a series of flashbacks, learns more about the past of his nemesis Lord Voldemort.

Meanwhile, he and his classmates are also caught up in matters of the heart. There’s frequent talk of “snogging,” as Lavender celebrates Ron’s victory in a quidditch game with a kiss that sends a jealous Hermione into a rage, and Harry sees Ginny kissing another boy.

“There is a much stronger romantic strand in this film than in earlier movies,” says Mr. Yates. “The characters have reached that point in their lives where their hormones are starting to fly and they are exploring sexuality and discovering the opposite sex.”

For its part, Summit Entertainment, the studio behind “Twilight,” says it has been careful to steer clear of the commercial juggernaut that “Potter” has become, especially because its “Twilight” fan base overlaps with the “Potter” audience. The studio says that its strategy has been to avoid releasing any “Twilight” material too close to big release dates for “Harry Potter.”

“It’s the only franchise that we ever pay attention to,” says Rob Friedman, chief executive and co-chairman of Summit Entertainment. “We are very cognizant of where they are, and we’ve always been wary of being in too close proximity to ‘Harry Potter’ because we know our fans cross over so much, and we definitely don’t want to compete with ‘Harry’ for attention.”

Haami Nyangibo, a 13-year-old girl from London, says that after years of reading “Harry Potter” she has come to find the “Twilight” books “far more relatable. They just engage in a more realistic way. A lot of my friends have gone off ‘Harry Potter’ and are onto ‘Twilight,’ ” she says.

For many girls, the appeal of “Twilight” lies in Edward Cullen, the gorgeous vampire who fights his own biological destiny to fall in love with Bella Swan, a human girl.

Robert Pattinson, the 23-year-old British heartthrob with unkempt hair and bedroom eyes who plays Cullen in the “Twilight” movies, has added to Edward’s mystique. Mr. Pattinson also has a history with the “Harry Potter” franchise: He played Harry’s onetime rival, Cedric Diggory, in the past two “Potter” movies.

Summit will release the “Twilight” sequel, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” on Nov. 20, the same time of year it released the first “Twilight” in 2008. The first trailer for the $50 million film prominently features action-packed werewolf sequences, which could appeal to male fans. While teen girls seemed to be the target audience of the first “Twilight” film, Summit says 40% of its audience was male, with most of those viewers under 25.

Tabloids have continued to stoke interest in the series, with weekly photos and stories chronicling a possible real-life romance between Ms. Stewart and Mr. Pattinson, as they shoot romantic scenes for upcoming sequels in locales like the small Tuscan city of Volterra, Italy. (A representative for Ms. Stewart declined to comment; a representative for Mr. Pattinson couldn’t be reached.)

Jeff Gomez, president of Starlight Runner Entertainment and a producer who has consulted on some top franchises, such as the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, says “Twilight’s” focus on romance means it could overtake “Potter” as the wand-wielding “Potterheads” grow up and into more sophisticated films. “I have a lot of confidence in ‘Harry Potter,’” he says, “and it has a narrative momentum that carries its core audience along.” But he says even a series as established as “Harry Potter” can be threatened by a franchise like “Twilight,” which has exploded so quickly and attracted such ravenous fans.

“Twilight” isn’t toppling “Harry Potter” quite yet. The franchise remains a global phenomenon, and advance online ticket sales suggest the film could top previous installments.

Ms. Penner says she has moved on from Harry, however. Recently, she came across her old “Harry Potter” poster while cleaning her room. “I saw it in the closet but by then ‘Twilight’ had come along, and I thought, ‘Who cares?’ ” she says. “Nobody really believes you can have magic, but some people believe you can find the perfect guy.”

According to UK Entertainment Site Digital Spy, Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) said their happy and support former co-star Robert Pattinson. Twilight actor Robert Pattinson played as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Speaking at a press conference, Radcliffe said: "I won't pretend we're best mates or knew each other really well but we really enjoyed working with each other, or at least I enjoyed working with him! He's doing brilliantly, which is fantastic.

"The thing that is interesting for me, is that Twilight is the only other franchise that comes close to Potter in terms of the mania that surrounds it, the attention that the leads get and just how global it is."

Felton added: "It's just great to see someone who has been in Harry Potter have a life after it, and a much bigger one! So I wish him all the success and I will see Twilight soon, I promise!"

‘Harry Potter’ Director Chris Columbus and 'Twilight'

According to MTV Hollywood crush Harry Potter director of Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets, Chris Columbus once eyed the Twilight script.

Looking at the “Twilight” that could have been, MTV News has learned that two-time “Harry Potter” director Chris Columbus took a glance at the script at the beginning of the adaptation process.

“I guess I did read a script early on,” says the director, who most recently helmed “I Love You, Beth Cooper.”“But I was doing something else.”

Columbus, who directed both “Sorcerer’s Stone” and “Chamber of Secrets” is no stranger to fantasy book series, planning his next film as an adaptation of the first “Percy Jackson” novel, “The Lightning Thief,” which has already begun casting.

In the meantime, he’s not looking at “Twilight” as a missed opportunity or regretting leaving the “Potter” franchise, though he admits that it’s a strange feeling to see the new films come out with different directors.

“I miss it just because I look at everyone I cast and all these sets I built. Everything is still standing there. It’s weird. It’s like looking at old home movies, though the people in the home movies are aging … The kids are getting older and they’ve become better actors. All the things I hoped for have come true … But it’s a very odd separation anxiety to see my entire cast and crew behind the camera. It’s like, ‘Where am I in this situation?’”

The London Paper examines if Jamie Campbell Bower will be the new Robert Pattinson. The appearance of new Brit hunk Campbell-Bower in the limelight as it follows Pattinson's example by appearing in the Twilight sequel New Moon Volturi ruler Caius and is also set to star in two Harry Potter films being Gellert Grindelwald.

The model-cum-singer-cum-actor is set to follow in the footsteps of tween hunk Robert Pattinson by appearing in the highly anticipated Twilight film sequel, New Moon , as the volatile Volturi ruler Caius.

And he will also be starring in the final two Harry Potter films as Gellert Grindelwald.

Campbell-Bower, who went to posh Bedales school and was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre, has already been seized upon by US gossip blogger Perez Hilton as the hottest new London export.

He has yet to come to mainstream attention, though he has appeared in Sweeney Todd opposite Johnny Depp and in Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla.

And he doesn't just act - he's also frontman in his own band, The Darling Buds (no, not the 80s Welsh indie outfit) and was formerly signed to Select Model Management.

Robert Pattinson After "Twilight"

What role is next on Pattinson’s agenda?

Many people do not remember that Robert Pattinson played the role of Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and was killed off. Now, he can't go unrecognized while walking down the street after taking the role as Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer’s book “Twilight.”

Once the “Twilight” saga ends, what’s next for the 22-year-old? MTV News asked Pattinson if he was going to get anything out of his Oscar appearance. “I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t know what to get out of it.”

MTV News reported Pattinson currently dropped out of his current movie, “Parts Per Billion.” As a result, he has been booked until the end of 2010 for the “Twilight” sequels. Is he ever going to play a role other than a vampire heartthrob?

“I have a gap in between, so I might do something in there, maybe,” he told MTV News about a small break between “New Moon” and “Eclipse” in late 2009. “I'm just relieved that I can kind of do anything [different].”

Before he got his fame through “Twilight,” Pattinson filmed a Salvador Dalí film, “Little Ashes,” which is set to release on May 8. Since he became famous overnight, Hollywood has been giving him many options to pursue other movies. Nevertheless, he does not know which script he will choose next out of the bunch.

“I don't know, just scripts randomly appeal to me,” he explained to MTV News. “I'm not looking specifically at any genre.”

Although millions of fans would disagree, Pattinson never thought of himself as a “heartthrob.” He believes he never had the personality to fit the mold of a sex symbol.

“I don't know if I could ever be cast in a heartthrob role except for ‘Twilight,’” he said. “And I didn't even know that was a heartthrob role.”

The Twilight series: Is it really just soft porn for teens?

It falls, officially, under the banner of “romance/fantasy/thriller.”

Teen lit with an edge, you might say.

And it is probably just what 35-year-old Stephenie Meyer set out to write when she invented her brooding blood-sucking vampire, Edward Cullen, his beloved mortal heartthrob Bella Swan and the tender tension between them for her blockbuster Twilight series, a set of four books which have now sold more than 40 million copies, have been translated into 40 languages and, last year, hit the big screen as a movie starring the freakily gorgeous Robert Pattinson and the comely Kristen Stewart.

The writing, literary critics will tell you, is hardly the stuff of Pulitzer worthiness — here’s a sample, if you haven’t had the pleasure:

“He grinned his crooked smile at me, stopping my breath and my heart. I couldn’t imagine how any angel could be more glorious. There was nothing about him that could be improved upon.”

Nevertheless, it is, as they say, a teen sensation.



Fans dress up like the characters and mob Meyer at book signings. The movie pulled in $40 million on its opening day, with fans lined up hours in advance.

In Vancouver recently, casting agents for the Twilight movie sequel, New Moon, set to be released for the 2009 Christmas movie season, were besieged by more than 300 young native Indian actors trying out for a specific role in the movie, some turning up for the auditions from as far away as Florida.

Meyer, the mother of three sons, says the idea came to her in a dream, in which a vampire was in love with a human girl but still wanted to, you know, suck her blood.

Herbie the Love Bug it ain’t.

It’s more dark sultry sexy vampire boy worshipping heaving-chested virginal girl, who is then literally hunted by his vampire family and bit badly on her wrist, and is then rescued by her vampire beau and whisked off to the prom for a night of dancing and unrequited sexual tension. Cue sequel.

So who’s reading, and watching, all this nonsense? Well, young adults — Twilight is said to be second only in popularity to the Harry Potter series — which means kids, preteens and teens mostly.

Which brings us to this email sent to me recently from a local parent of one of those Twilight fans:

I have been bothered by something . . . and wondered if you have thought about it as well. I know that you have heard of the Twilight series for young adults. My now 19-year-old daughter read all four books when she was 17 and 18, and loved them (actually, she loved the first, and enjoyed them less as the series went on, saying the writing was pretty poor, and the same things happened over and over).

My Grade 6 daughter (who just turned 12) is telling me that most of her friends (11 and 12) are reading the books, and becoming “obsessed” (her word). My older girl (smart, studying engineering at Queens, and NOT a prude) said that these books are definitely NOT for Katherine's age, but good for older girls.

I have read number one and parts of the others, and agree, for many reasons. My issue is with parents who are actually encouraging the reading (ie. “My 10-year-old must be so smart and mature to be reading such advanced books!”).

There are other series being read by young, like The Gossip Girl series, for example. It’s just soft porn (and superficial, mean, and poorly written), in my mind, and I can’t help but wonder: Have any of these mothers ever read one of these books?

And would they feel any differently if they did?
