Twilight saga loveteam Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart made it to Forbe’s Top-Grossing On-Screen Couples List as their portrayal of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan character in the movie.

Rounding out the top five are Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the Twilight movies. While romance might take a backseat to action in many of the movies on our list, it's the driving force in the Twilight films. It doesn't hurt that Pattinson and Stewart are also a couple in real life. So far the movies have earned $1.8 billion at the global box office. Twilight Trio Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Interview about their Friendship, Closeness in the set, Twilight Franchise, Breaking Dawn and more

Sky Movies Magazine: So, the third movie came out in cinemas earlier this year and you’re about to start shooting the fourth – did you ever expect Twilight to be such a big success?
Taylor Lautner: It was a big surprise. When we were filming Twilight we just thought we were making a movie that we were passionate about. We didn’t know if anybody else was going to want to watch it. We had no idea it was going to turn out like this and then it just kept growing and growing.
Robert Pattinson: I genuinely thought this was a dark little indie vampire love story... And then it just ended up being this massive thing. I didn’t see it coming at all... But it’s not like I objected to suddenly being in a big film! I mean, it’s great.
Kristen Stewart: What’s cool is that you have this fantasy full
of myths and stuff. So it does raise the emotional stakes. I think that’s why girls love it so much, because it’s just a little bit more serious than what you’re dealing with in real life. It’s just a little bit more passionate than whatever you’re feeling.

SMM: Have your lives changed a lot with all the press and fan attention?
TL: Yeah, a little bit, because it’s not normal to wake up and have 12 paparazzi cars waiting for you, who are just going to follow you all day...
KS: It’s really funny when they fall down all over each other because they’re running backwards to try and get your picture. Whenever you see me really happy in a paparazzi shot, it’s because I’m laughing at them.
TL: But the pros that come with the job highly outweigh the cons. I’ve been having the time of my life these past two years. But it’s very important to not let it affect your life. I really live in two different worlds. I have the Twilight world and then I have the same world that existed before, with my family and friends.
RP: I’m relatively fearful about when the series ends, because it’s such a great security blanket. It’s like a net. You can afford to make mistakes when you have another Twilight film to make. But after that, I guess you’re on your own.

SMM: You guys have worked together for a while now – how have your relationships changed?
KS: We have a completely different relationship now. We’ve become good friends... I care immensely about Rob and Taylor, we’ve really grown close – and it doesn’t get weird!
TL: Yeah, we’ve grown closer and closer. I mean, we’re like best friends now and it’s really amazing how much that helps. We’re able to be more open with each other and we have more fun. I think that creates a better working environment.

SMM: Do you ever annoy each other?
KS: They don’t annoy me [laughs]. We have totally normal relationships with each other... We can be honest and not be worried about offending each other.
TL: Kristen and I are super close [shoots a mock ‘challenging look’ at Pattinson]. We talk about anything and everything. During downtime we’ll either throw a football around or she’ll throw a grape and I’ll catch it in my mouth... You get really bored on set sometimes. I don’t know how we’d film this franchise if we weren’t as close as we are. It’d be a nightmare.

SMM: Taylor and Rob – your characters are rivals in the films. Is it difficult shooting the scenes, particularly in Eclipse, where you fight?
TL: Rob’s very funny. Like in the tent scenes where we’re yelling and screaming at each other – it’s so hard hating Rob because he’s just a fun, nice guy, so having to look him in the eye and scream at him is difficult. Every time after they called ‘cut’, we both just burst out laughing, so that’s pretty challenging.
RP: I was in a very strange mood when we were shooting that scene [laughs].
I kept getting obsessed with the word, ‘thoughts’, because with an American accent it sounds like ‘farts’. And I couldn’t get over it, the entire day. The opening line was, “Can you at least keep your thoughts to yourself?” I mean, I’m sitting in this tent and every single time [laughs]... And Taylor got to the point where he was just like, “That doesn’t even sound the same – it’s not funny at all.”

RP: [There was a scene] where Kristen was supposed to be asleep on the floor. So I looked down and she’s looking up and trying to make me laugh the entire time. But it meant the scene got some energy to it, because I was trying to stop myself laughing and that kind of made it easier.

SMM: Jacob and Bella come even nearer to getting it together in Eclipse – does that cause any weirdness between you?
TL: It was good for Jacob to get in there and get his shot and kiss Bella for the first time. Definitely [laughs].
RP: Not only do they do the kissing scenes, they never do it when I’m on set. You genuinely feel like someone’s cheating on you... I’d come back to work and be like, “So how was it?”
TL: [There was one kiss] at the climax of the movie. We’re on top of this mountain and the background was amazing. It’s a really important, emotional moment... But it was so funny because whenever Kristen and I would kiss, as soon as we’d finish, Kristen would look at me and go, “We just kissed.” I’d be like, “Yeah, we did.” It was funny.

The Twilight Saga New Moon 26...no, him!...SMM: Did you guys get embarrassed?
TL: No, when Kristen and I do scenes, we are Jacob and Bella. Everything we do, whether we’re kissing or fighting. We definitely live those characters so after three movies it kind of just happens now.
KS: Yeah, I could probably be certified absolutely insane at this point because
I’ve gotten so into the head space of Twilight’s reality…

SMM: Can you tell us a bit about the next installment, Breaking Dawn?
KS: Well, it’s now been split into two movies. We start filming in November…
TL: I’m really excited that it’s going to be two movies. I think that’s going to work really well and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Bill
Condon [the new director]. When I heard he was on board I was like, “OK, this is going to be golden.”
KS: I think each director has suited the projects perfectly. Catherine [Hardwicke, the director of the first movie] has a really strong connection to youth and discovery and stuff like that, and it’s really hard to describe how nice Chris [Weitz, the director of  New Moon] is. He’s so compassionate and has a wisdom about him – I really needed someone to look up to and who was willing to go to the depths with me. David [Slade, the director of Eclipse] has more of a morbid sensibility. Which is good as Eclipse gets a little scarier…

SMM: How have your characters changed as the movies progress?
RP: When I first read the books, I was like... I can’t play this. This is impossible. But I’ve tried the entire time to make [Edward] the perfect underdog. No matter what anyone says to him, no matter what heroic deeds he does, it’s impossible to convince him that he’s done anything right. And the only thing that has made him feel alive – feel anything – is Bella.
The-Twilight-Saga---Eclipse-(25)...but not themTL: In New Moon, I was kind of playing a split personality; for the first half I was the old Jacob and then the second half, I was the new Jacob. For Eclipse, Jacob has matured and he’s a little more serious because he knows what he’s dealing with now, which was definitely emotionally challenging. That’s why Eclipse is my favourite movie, because everything that’s great about this franchise – the romance, the action, the danger, the suspense, everything – Eclipse takes to a whole other level. It’s the height of the love triangle – Bella is being torn between these two guys who are literally fighting for her.
KS: Well, in Breaking Dawn, Bella becomes a wife. She becomes a mother. Luckily I’ve played the character for a while. If Breaking Dawn was its own movie, it would be much more difficult to play such a young wife and mother, but because I have been with her since she was 17, it’s been a progression. I think that’s what’s so cool about the series. It takes her a long time to get to that point and she loses a lot and then gets it back. I think to make decisions like that you have to really know yourself and trust yourself and she achieves that. She’s very straight up and honest about everything and I’m excited because I know the guys so well and we’ve all taken this journey together.

Kristen Stewart thinks Bella Swan is misunderstood

"Twilight" fans love to debate their favorite novel in Stephenie Meyer's bestselling vampire series. Kristen Stewart says she has her own favorite -- and it's the most explicit and intense of the bunch.

"This one's really good. This one really goes there, finally," said the actress who plays the iconic Bella Swan of "Breaking Dawn." "This one is like the forming of a family. You see everything really come to fruition because I feel like [Bella] has sort of gone through an accelerated growth period."

In November, Stewart will reprise the Bella role when she begins filming the first half of “Breaking Dawn,” the fourth movie in the “Twilight” franchise, which will be directed by Bill Condon. The story follows [spoiler alert: if you aren't familiar with "Breaking Dawn," skip to the last paragraph] Bella’s marriage to vampire Edward Cullen (Rob Pattinson), as the two finally consummate their relationship and Bella becomes pregnant.

"At this point," Stewart says, "you do accept [Bella] as a mom.”

Because their child is half-human and half-vampire, Bella’s pregnancy is riddled with complications -- all leading up to a dramatic birth scene, in which Edward tears open Bella’s stomach with his teeth to save their baby.

There has been speculation about how the graphic scene will be depicted on screen. Stewart acknowledges it's a "crazy concept," also describing werewolf Jacob's hearing "vampire teeth against vampire skin" during the childbirth scene.

Just how that will play out on screen, though, has yet to be determined. "I've seen the script," which tracks closely to the book, she says. "But it depends on how they shoot it."


Stewart, who was speaking to 24 Frames to promote her new independent drama "Welcome to the Rileys," said she thinks her "Twilight" character has been misunderstood. “Bella’s criticized sometimes for being, like, you know -- I don’t know, selfish and overly emotional and silly and frivolous and annoying and young,” said Stewart. “That’s sort of like a very judgmental way of looking at it."

Forks High School facade can still be Save if the community raises money

The 1920s-era Forks High School facade might not be in its twilight -- at least not yet.

A legal requirement imposed by City Hall forces the School Board to allow the public time to raise money -- more than a quarter-million dollars -- to reinforce the brick facade and transform it into a stand-alone monument on the redeveloped Forks High School campus.

The Quillayute Valley School District board decided Friday that the facade was too expensive to save with bond money used to finance the construction of new school buildings.

The conditional use permit granted by the city to do the construction work requires the district to give the public time to save the facade through alternate funding, Superintendent Diana Reaume said Monday.

The bid by Primo Construction Inc. of Carlsborg includes an alternate additional $271,000 to reinforce the facade to remain as a memory of the 1925 school building, the rest of which was torn down in June.

"Our efforts to save the facade are not over," Reaume said.

Under terms of the city conditional use permit, the school district must hold a public hearing and give the public 45 days to come up with alternative funding, Reaume said.

The date for the hearing has not been set, but will be shortly, Reaume said.

"Also, even though the alternate bid [to reinforce the facade] was rejected at this time, the district has 45 more days to go back and accept any of the alternatives previously rejected," she said.

The 1925 brick building -- which bore the words "Quillayute High School" over the front door -- plays an important role in the Twilight saga, which has thrust Forks and the West End into the international spotlight.

So has the facade -- the apparent rejection of which was reported in Monday's editions of the Peninsula Daily News as well as on the newspaper's website, www.peninsuladailynews.com.

The Associated Press transmitted the story of the facade's intended demise nationwide, including a photo of the boarded-up entryway taken by West End photojournalist Lonnie Archibald.

The $271,000 to save the facade is on top of the successful $12.2 million construction bid accepted Friday.

In addition to Twilight fans who often visit the school where fictional heroine Bella Swan meets her vampire love, Edward Cullen, the building holds nostalgia for generations of West End families who attended school there long before Bella and Edward hit the pop culture.

The facade and the building to which it formerly was attached never has appeared in any of the "Twilight" movies, which were filmed in British Columbia, Oregon and Southern Washington.

Because of the many people with memories of the high school and actual Twilight fans with attachment to the building, the district is in the process of having 1,500 bricks from the demolished portion salvaged, Reaume said.

The bricks must be professionally cleaned, then will be put up for bid at the 2011 Forks Scholarship Auction.

The money from the auction will not be used to save the facade, Reaume said.

"That money will go right back to the kids," she said.

Construction of the new 39,500-square-foot school complex will begin later this month.

Completion set for the end of 2011.

The new construction will house six regular classrooms, two resource classrooms, a computer lab, a special-needs classroom, a band and choir room, a multipurpose classroom, a technology lab, a library and the school's offices.

After completion, the portion of the school built in 1963 will be demolished.

Additions to the school built in 2000 will be incorporated into the new building.

School district voters approved an $11 million construction bond in February.

The state is providing $7 million.

Kristen Stewart to appear at Scream 2010 awards

The Twilight star has signed on to make an appearance at Spike TV's Scream 2010 awards at L.A.'s Greek Theater. (Show tapes Oct. 16 and then airs three days later.)

No word yet if Robert Pattinson will be joining her, but with Eclipse up for six awards, ya never know. The lineup already includes True Blood stars Alexander Skarsgård, Sam Trammell, Rutina Wesley and Kristen Bauer and muscled-up Thor star Chris Hemsworth.

Stephenie Meyer, beloved author of the Twilight series books, has been chosen by Forbes as one of the "World's Most Powerful Women."

Meyer placed 49th on the list of one hundred, with the publication issuing the following synopsis:

"Following the J.K. Rowling model of mum-turned-mega-millionaire, Stephenie Meyer had held only one job, as a receptionist in an Arizona property company before penning the bestselling Twilight series, which has sold 116 million copies worldwide. Meyer's vision of a world where vampires and teens co-exist may be to blame for the blood-lusting trend that continues four years later with TV series like The Vampire Diaries. Her sci-fi romance novel, The Host, spent 26 weeks as a bestseller and is rumored to be in pre-production for a 2011 release. The good thing about Stephenie Meyer being a part of this is that she, like a lot of the other women included, has used her influence for the benefit of others as well. For example, her most recent release, Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella, helped raise millions for the American Red Cross.

Costume Designer talks Kristen Stewart Role in Welcome to the Rileys

The Back-Lot podcast talks with costume designer Kim Bowen, who worked on the film Welcome to the Rileys starring Kristen Stewart, James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo. Bowen talks about working on the film with director Jake Scott and the level of commitment from each of the three stars.

Here are some excerpts of Bowen’s interview talking about Stewart:

“Kristen Stewart is a very unusual person, acting since she was a child she has deliberately steered clear of all the candy coloured heaven that Hannah Montana Hollywood offers.”

Getting the perfect look for Stewart’s character of Mallory:

“Kristen Stewart was a challenge because she is really, really elegant. She is one of the most naturally elegant people I have ever encountered. She just had a natural thing about her body, the way she is shaped and the way she moves. She is an extremely gifted actress and I don’t know if that is part of what lends her as such an expert interpretation of clothes.”

“We went through three different paths to get her wardrobe right. The first time it was a stylist’s dream, she looked amazing. A modern version of Jodie Foster in “Taxi Driver,” she just looked amazing. We then realized it was wrong, she looked too good. We wanted to have her look more fragile.”

 ”In the end, we had to really strip it down. She ended up wearing large over-size clothes, hiding herself. You only get to really see her fully in her stripper outfits, very crude -what a young girl would think sexy looks like.”

 Kristen Stewart’s investment in the character:

“Kristen is a very invested actress. She has been doing the Twilight films, and it was very important to her to play this character with a real dose of reality. I don’t think she wanted anything frivolous out of it, I don’t think she wanted to be glamorous. That wasn’t important to her, she wanted it to be real.”

Welcome to the Rileys tells the story of Gandolfini and Leo, as Doug and his wife Lois who are dealing with the death of their teenage daughter. On a business trip to New Orleans, Doug meets teenage stripper Mallory. After turning her down at the strip club where Mallory works, Doug offers to pay Mallory $100 a day if he can stay for a while, get his head together. No sex. No strings. Lois soons joins Doug in New Orleans, and the couple try to heal their broken lives and save Mallory’s in the process.

‘Twilight’ book by Stephenie Meyer passes the Two Million Sales in the UK

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight, the first instalment in the US novelist's hugely popular dark romance series of the same name, has become only the 13th novel to sell more than two million copies in the UK since the turn century.

Stephenie Meyer follows in the footsteps of J K Rowling, Dan Brown and Mark Haddon - the only other authors to have achieved the two-million-in-the-21st-century feat.

Last week, the book sold 16,672 copies in the UK, taking its total sales to date to 2,005,609. Just over £9.7m has been spent on the book since it was first published in the UK in 2006 - a year in which it sold just 1,684 copies, according to Nielsen BookScan data.

It wasn't until the Summer of 2008 and the release of the fourth book in the series, Breaking Dawn, that Meyer became a household name in the UK. In 2007, sales of Twilight totalled 27,000 copies, but the following year were a massive 355,000 thanks in part to its silver-screen adaptation hitting UK cinemas in December. Sales last year totalled 1,267,000 copies while the book has sold 355,000 copies thus far in 2010.

Including The Host, and other Twilight titles such as boxed sets, the Twilight Graphic Novel and The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, £47.7m has been spent on Stephenie Meyer's books since the beginning of 2006. Last year, one in every 47 books bought in the UK was penned by the US novelist, while almost 20 pence in every pound spent on a children's fiction title went towards one of her Twilight novels.

Billy Burke Interview On Set of DRIVE ANGRY 3D and talks how Twilight effecteted him

Twilight fans aren’t going to know what hit them. That’s because while Billy Burke has made an impression as Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) mild mannered father in the Twilight movies, in director Patrick Lussier’s Drive Angry 3D, Burke plays an over-the-top villainous cult leader that dresses like a rock star.

Question: So, you’re shirt has kind of got a rock star vibe to it.

Billy Burke: You think? Well, that’s what we were mildly going for. A little cross between Jim Jones, Jim Morrison, and maybe a little bit of Tony Robbins. [laughter]

Is that something that drew you to the part?

Burke: Yeah. I immediately liked just the unreasonable flamboyant attitude that this guy had. So, yeah.

The obvious and immediate thing that all of us nerds are thinking right away is wondering whether or not this is a little bit cathartic after having played the dad in Twilight.

Burke: It is, indeed. I started my career actually, maybe the first 10, 11 years, playing the bad boyfriend with the gun. And I got ill with that and moved on, for some reason, to playing cops all the time. And so this is quite a nice and refreshing departure from all that. I get to, yeah, let loose a little bit, do some stuff that I wouldn’t normally do; that nobody would normally do, I suppose. [laughs]

What’s going on with the nails?

Billy_Burke_imageBurke: That was an afterthought. We started to talk about what this guy looks like and what he does. And then just before we got down here, I thought, well…I was thinking back to movies in the ‘80s and similar characters that I enjoyed watching. And I remember a particular character from a particular movie that I enjoyed watching. And one of the moments in that film started on his nails. I won’t tell you what it is because that will give too much away and I will be stealing. But yeah, that was an idea that sort of came in the midst of putting this guy together. So I went in and had them done, and now they are a pain in the ass to live with. But they are working well for this.

But it’s not really stealing, it’s more of an homage, isn’t it?

Burke: It’s an homage, yeah. We can call it that. I like that word.

Burke: Yeah. Do we know what movie I’m talking about?

Superman 4? [laughter]

Burke: Wow! Uh, no!

I almost wanted to say something like 48 Hours, but I’m sure I’m wrong.

Burke: No. It’s…I’m not going to tell you, because that’s just not….Once you see it again, you’ll figure it out. It’s a good one. Superman 4? I don’t know that I ever saw Superman 4.

With a movie that is hyper-violent like this, a very hard movie, do you almost feel reticent to go over the top, that you are going over the top with the character, or are you just kind of going…

Burke: I don’t feel reticent to, but I…it’s a pretty rare moment for me when I really go that far over the top. Sometimes when something gets stuck up my ass, I can be pushed to go there. But I normally don’t like to. I like to stay within the boundaries of what I think is realistic. But in this movie nothing is realistic, so…But yeah, there is a lot of freedom here. I mean there are places that I can go that I have enjoyed going.

We saw you shooting. He seems like a pretty intense guy.

Burke: Yeah. He’s got a vision. He’s got a vision and he feels right. And there’s nothing…As one of the lines in the movie says, there’s nothing more dangerous than a righteous man with an idea.

When do we first see you in the movie? Are you right there from the beginning?

Billy_Burke_imageBurke: No. I think Jonah is talked about early on, we know that there is somebody out there that has something of importance to Nick’s character, and then we see glimpses of him, and then he appears in visions. And then he shows up on about page 33, I think.

Do you get to drive any of the cool cars?

Burke: No. Have you seen the RV? The RV is circa 1975, maybe, something like that, which is completely fitting for what we are doing here, because it could have been a real tricked out sort of supped up thing, but Patrick wanted to stay with something that would fit the feeling of the movie. The movie is very reminiscent of some of the ‘70s movies that they used to make that were made with reckless abandon that I’m really getting a huge kick out of. I’m seeing some of the stuff that we’re shooting and it really feels like old-time Steve McQueen type stuff, but with a little bit of extra 2010 juice.

What’s the story with the… You’ve got the pentagram with the crown there.

Burke: That’s Jonah’s mark. It’s his emblem. It’s the symbol of what he stands for. I guess some would call it satanic, but I don’t really think that he is doing these things in Satan’s name. He is taking it upon himself to take what those ideals might be and putting them into his own school of thought and bringing it from there. So that’s his stamp that he puts on his followers and the symbol of what we are all going after.

Is he a villain that we can kind of understand why he’s doing what he’s doing, or is he just crazy?

Burke: I don’t…[laughs] With what he’s doing, with what we’re actually doing here, I don’t think that anybody’s going to really understand what he’s doing, because let’s face it, we’re about to sacrifice a baby here.

Well who hasn’t thought about that? [sarcastically]

Burke: Who hasn’t done that? [sarcastically] So no, I don’t think anybody is really going to be on his side. But saying that, there’s things being done by all the characters in this movie where you are not going to be on their side. Everybody’s almost the bad guy in this thing; he’s just the worst guy.

Was there any apprehension on your part? Because your character does apparently do some gnarly stuff in the film. Was there any hesitation for you signing on, or were you sort of like, “This is just a good part.”?

Burke: I thought about it for a second. I’ve got a daughter who is almost two years old right now who is about the age of the baby in the movie that we’re about to do nefarious things to. I did think about it for a second, but then I thought, you know, it’s just a movie. And within this movie, you need to…with all the things that are going so over the top and the places that we go to in this movie, you need somebody who is going to go that extra mile in badness. And once I figured out what we were doing and how I could do that, I said, “Fuck it. Let’s do it.”

Did you go back and research any old cult leader, like real life cult leaders and stuff to get a sense of how they kind of roped people in?

I remembered Jim Jones from when I was a kid, and I remembered seeing some tapes, and I remembered hearing some of the tapes from back then, and I immediately thought of some of that stuff. So I did go back and listen to some of the Jonestown tapes for some of this stuff. I don’t know if anybody remembers, but that guy had a really, like, bad, gay lisp. [laughs] And I thought about taking that on for a second, but that would just be too much of an homage. So we 86’ed that. But I did listen to some of that stuff, yeah.

How big is your following in the movie? Is it a cult of like five…?

Burke: I think it starts with a cult of about 11 and ends up with a cult of about 30? [laughs]

Well, that’s pretty good.

Burke: I think he’s a lot bigger…I mean he thinks he’s a lot bigger than he actually is. But, no, it’s not enormous.

Does your character have a history with Nic Cage’s character, or does it start here?

Burke: There is a history. Nic’s character’s daughter was one of my first followers. And she was sort of my muse, my focus. And I took her in, and once I realized what I could get from her and what she could do for me, I started to use her for…basically started to focus on her for what I could really do, and that is produce a baby from her and use that baby to, well, in his mind, bring on a new world order.

Talk a little bit about filming here in Shreveport and your reaction to being here.

Burke: What’s your reaction to being here?

No! You know what I mean. Just talk about filming down here, and, you know, what’s it been like for you?

Burke: When I heard we were filming here, and I’ve spoken to a few people who’ve shot here before, they all said, “Oh, Shreveport. Yeah, well, have fun!” But I’ve actually really enjoyed my time here. I brought the family down, the wife, and the nanny, and the baby, and we got a nice little house on the outskirts of town, and we’re having…Actually, it’s kind of a nice little relaxed vacation. There’s not a lot to do, but it feels unforced, like we’re not really supposed to do anything except sort of work and relax and hang out together when we can. I actually kind of really like the vibe here. How about you?

We’ve only been here for…not even 24 hours.

Burke: Yeah. Well, you should check out the El Dorado casino. It’s quite nice.

[laughter]

Burke: I like to play a lot of poker in my off time. So for my first two weeks when the family wasn’t down here, that’s where my off-time was spent, playing a little poker.

Cash or tournament?

Burke: There are no tournaments at the El Dorado. I do play tournament poker, but…Well, they have those daytime tournaments, but I can’t show up for those. So I play some cash games. It’s not big money, but I made some friends there and we had a good time.

Can you actually do things? Like, can you go into…

Burke: You got some black nails, kid. What’s up?

I did it for you! I was told about your nail polish. I was curious. Can you do the casino thing like anonymously? I am curious. How has the Twilight thing affected you? You can’t go into Hot Topic.

 Hot Topic’s a rough one, yeah. When I’m not…when I don’t have the mustache on my face, it’s a lot easier. But yeah…Look, I’m not Nic Cage or Robert Pattinson now. But yeah, it does happen. So when I go into the poker rooms and stuff like that, they…it’s mostly like…especially sitting across the table from somebody, and with these nails, they start with that, and they go, “Hey, what’s that?” And then they start to look up…It’s one of those “I know you from somewhere type of things.” And then somebody else will say, “He’s the da, da, da, da da”. And then it ends up with, “Can you take a picture with my daughter?” That’s where it usually goes. But the guys at the poker table, they don’t really care. They just want your money!

I know you guys are going to make one more of these things. Maybe two, I don’t know. Are you sort of happy that it’s coming to an end or are your sort of like…

Burke: The Twilight stuff?

Yeah, or has it been a fun ride for you?

Burke: It’s been a great gig for me. Let’s face it. I’ve been hanging around in this biz for 19 years now, and the advent of those movies has certainly shed a different light on where I’m at, and has pushed it into a different place. So I got nothing but love and respect for those movies, and for that character and for all the people who make the movies. For me, it’s kind of like showing up on a television show set, because I go back every time and kind of put the same clothes on and get into the same groove, and it’s very comfortable. And in terms of career stuff, yeah, it’s done a lot. So I got nothing but love for it. And yes, we are going to make the next one starting in November, possibly here in Shreveport. We’re going to do some exteriors in Vancouver, and I hear they’re thinking about Louisiana for some stage stuff.

Just buy a house.

Burke: I might as well. The wife’s already looking into it. Went down to New Orleans for a week and she fell in love with that place, as did I.

Don’t take the highway.

Any of them. I got two tickets…

Burke: Oh, really?

[laughter]

Burke: We made it down and back with no problem!

I’m not driving back.

Burke: New Orleans is great now. We had a great time down there. But Shreveport, I do not have a problem…

Yeah. You haven’t actually talked about working with Nic and against him in some of these scenes. Can you talk about his process and your process and how it’s… What’s it like to kick his ass?

Burke: I don’t know what his process is like. All that I know is that when he shows up…The first time we actually just ran through a scene and rehearsed, I had one of those moments where I was looking across from him, talking and reading lines, and saying to myself, “That’s Nic Cage. I grew up watching him. I grew up loving him.” And he didn’t let me down in terms of just his humanity. He couldn’t be a sweeter more respectful guy, and couldn’t be more into the…We started riffing on stuff, and I said, “Is that cool that we’re just riffing?” And he’s like, “Yeah man, it’s like jazz. It’s best when it’s like jazz!” And I’m like, “All right. I’m gonna quote you on that. That’s good.”

[laughter]

Burke: Yeah. From what I know of him so far, I love that guy.

He’s a big comic book guy and he can geek out on a lot of stuff. Have you geeked out with him at all? Whether it be that kind of stuff or just about previous films you’ve been in that you’ve been a fan of?

Burke: I have not…I am not one of those guys who will sit there and rant on to a person about how much I love and respect their work and stuff like that. I think that gets obnoxious. But one of his early films, “Racing with the Moon” was one of my top 10 all time movies when I was a kid growing up. It was he and Shaun Penn. It would be nice to ask question like you guys are asking, like, “Hey, what was that like?” But I’m not going to do that. But…What was the original question? Where were we?

If you were able to geek out with him at all.

Burke: Oh. I’m not a…No. I don’t…I’m not a comic book geek. I would love to be because I love the comic book geeks. [laughs] But no, didn’t have any of those moments where we talked about, you know, how cool it would be to be the guy with the skull running around on the motorcycle. No. That would have been cool.

Real-Estate Tycoon Tom Barrack Red, Likes and Learns something from Twilight Book

Tom Barrack is one of the biggest real-estate deal-makers in the world. His investment firm, Colony Capital LLC, has raised $16 billion from pension plans and other big investors to buy properties like gaming company Station Casinos Inc., Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, and possibly even Walt Disney Co.’s Miramax movie studio.

But recently, it turns out, Mr. Barrack has also been doing some soul-searching—thanks to Stephenie Meyer’s popular vampire-novel series, “Twilight.”

In a July 2 memo encouraging his employees to consider outside points of view—you can read it in full at the end of this post—Mr. Barrack describes a lonely evening on a yacht in Turkey after a cancelled business meeting. In the yacht, Mr. Barrack writes, he came upon a book on which “were written the words that strike terror in the hearts of every macho, red-blooded male…TWILIGHT.” He goes on:

As I sat there with nothing to do the book kept taunting me. I began to think that there must be something I don’t understand. What could it be? What is it all about? Women don’t just read these books, they live them. They become each paragraph. I picked it up, but then immediately dropped it like a hot coal. What if someone saw me reading this? My macho reputation would be finished! I would be kicked out of the bench press section of the gym. My polo compadres would send me packing to the pony rides and my surfing buddies would exile me to the kiddie pool.

But it was a long night and there was absolutely nothing, and I mean NOTHING else to do. Long story short—not only did I read Twilight, I read the other two as well!! I was fascinated, captivated even. However, what intrigued me was not the same thing that hooked the millions of women whose lives and had been changed by this series, but something else entirely.

Mr. Barrack argues that the “anticipation” in the romantic relationship between a teenage girl and a vampire has made the “Twilight” series compelling to millions of women.

Men, however, are all about the destination, the result, the speed and the outcome. The journey is merely penance to get to the destination. Which is why despite the vampires and werewolves, this book is kryptonite to most men.

Mr. Barrack urges his employees to take the July 4 holiday to draw a lesson from the kind of entertainment offered by “Twilight.” (None of the 21 senior-management executives and six of the 30 “other senior executives” listed on Colony’s website are women.) “In every day business, we think we know it all,” he writes. “We are lacking creativity.”

The memo was briefly posted on Mr. Barrack’s public “Chairman’s Corner” blog on the Colony website. Someone who had seen the memo on the website sent a copy to The Wall Street Journal. A Colony spokesman confirmed the memo was written by Mr. Barrack and said it was meant as an internal letter to employees.

The last few weeks have been an incredible adventure. Thanks to you, Colony is on fire across the globe and we are conquering new frontiers and new themes on a daily basis in almost every venue in which we conduct our business. You are the A Team and I am deeply grateful and proud of what all of you have “teamed” to our reality.

As you know, I have been caught in a vortex of meteoric movement in every aspect of life and that has intensified on a cosmic scale the last few weeks. My personal goal has always been to feel the wind blow through my hair when standing on the ledge. Well, I certainly found the ledge, if not the hair. It is where I thankfully and excitedly anticipate the scent of excitement and fulfillment the most. I seem to love the edge.

My real job is to act as the Senior Information Officer for all of you and share my points of view, newfound information, instincts, and reactions so that you can incorporate them into a plan of action, which, through sweat and alchemy, becomes profit for our investors as well as ourselves. Today the volatility and uncertainty in the world is at epic proportions and perhaps the most valuable tool that I can share with you is the ability to adapt to, and analyze other points of views. Especially, to understand those points of view which you find truly frightening, disturbing, or life threatening. We all find comfort in crawling into our own “content” of life and with death defying stubbornness refuse to look outside to the “context” in which other people view our “content”. The wars of the world since the beginning of time have been fought over diverging points of view. There is no price too great to defend it. Unfortunately, that inflexibility does not work well for global traders or businessmen. Adaptability and understanding of strange bedfellows becomes a competitive edge.

I am going to share with you a personal breakthrough, which does not relate directly to our business but does reflect upon how we all look at all the “stuff” that drives us on a daily basis. Many of you will think that I have lost my mind or have finally experienced a mystical intervention of “my feminine side”. I promise you, it is neither.

I have had an agonizingly tough couple of weeks and have survived on pure adrenaline in the midst of tumult, controversy, tough negotiations with business counterparts, and a grueling travel itinerary that was challenging even for me. One of the recent meetings was in Turkey with our Mars partners. I made arrangements to have a bit of yacht time with them. As I made my way into the main cabin I saw something so frightening it left me speechless. There, staring up at me from the ebony coffee table was a book. On the cover was a gorgeous red apple nestled between two soft and caring hands. Between the hands were written the words that strike terror in the hearts of every macho, red-blooded male…TWILIGHT. AAAARRRGGGGHHHH!! Alone, on a boat, with no wifi, no satellite, no magazines, no newspapers, just me and this book. This piece of chick lit, teeny bopper heartthrob stuff. Terror on the high seas! I wanted nothing to do with any of it. Not relevant, not interesting.

For you male Colonists, here is a brief synopsis. Stubborn teenage girl meets a handsome but moody vampire and against all odds they fall in love.

Here is my macho take – Stephanie Meyer is a total genius. As I flipped through the pages I was startled by the lack of detailed description of Bella and the surgical and illuminating development of Edward. As hard as I tried I could not really picture Bella, but I was grabbed by Edward’s character – gorgeous, super human, super strong, super fast and most importantly encompassing the wisdom of a 109-year-old man in the guise of a 17-year-old boy.

The description of Bella on the other hand, was not moving, or compelling. What I realized is the genius of Stephanie was that she knew that by keeping the character generic, any and every woman could climb inside and picture herself in Bella’s shoes. Thus the fascination and deep emotional reactions to what many (including myself) thought was a foolish teenage trashy novel.

I definitely got that the “anticipation” was much more romantic and sexy than the “consummation” to the woman. Slow, patient, caring, tender…. (guys have you heard those words before?) I found him incredibly appealing as he was taking care of Bella, putting her first, distancing himself from her to protect her and yet never being able to get her out of his mind. The relationship stood the test of time through many years, other men, family challenges and misconceptions of valiant and loving acts. A human relationship with a vampire is challenging on many levels, the least of which being you get older as your partner remain timeless. It was enticing, captivating, alluring…and dangerous. Through it all she believed that she could do it…. change her life… change his life…make it different…in spite of what conventional wisdom dictated.

Every woman longs for the anticipation, the romance, the journey, the taboo, the patience, and the attentiveness. Men, however, are all about the destination, the result, the speed and the outcome. The journey is merely penance to get to the destination. Which is why despite the vampires and werewolves, this book is kryptonite to most men.

In a world of technology these books are unique. There is so little imagination left in most of forms of entertainment today. See it, Google it, play it, do it…there is very little old fashioned make believe anymore. I could go on and on, but I know by now many of you are saying, “what happened to our leader?”… “Maybe Lebanese really is a sexual preference rather than a nationality”. I promise none of the above. [Mr. Barrack is of Lebanese descent.]

Here is my point. The idea of devoting half a day to reading these books was something that never, NEVER, entered my mind as something I would ever, EVER do. I hated them. I mocked them. It made no difference to me that over 20 million books were sold, movies made, and Team Edward and Team Jacob pandemonium had engulfed the world. I was simply stuck in my point of view.

Once I ventured into the books I learned something. I now understand why some women are emotionally altered from merely reading a book. I have also gained a deeper realization that understanding the circumstances and points of views of those with whom we are negotiating, working, living, loving or fighting is the key determinant factor in an enduring relationship.

In every day business, we think we know it all. We are the captains of our industry and we possess all the global knowledge. That which we don’t understand we push a button and it appears before us. We are lacking creativity…. it is hard for us to dream… harder for us to change our lives… hard to live in a situation that other people view as unconventional. And for sure, we all have no idea on how to be satisfied with the status quo.

It is time for all of us to become more creative, spend more time outside of the strict arithmetic cadence of our business, and understand foreign points of view. Most importantly we must really find the “moment”. Anticipation is everything. The process of getting to a destination is the objective and the more illumination, color, and vitality we give to the “road” the less important the final destination becomes. It will be what it will be!!!

On this 4th of July, slow down, take a breath, rediscover your imagination and create some excitement in your life. Take a few days to expand on the qualities of the character you would really like to become. Then live it, do it, become it! The better you are as an individual, the better we will be as a team.

I feel renewed and refreshed, having gotten out of my comfort zone and experiencing something so totally out of my normal realm. I don’t get it…. but I feel it. Taking the agenda-less time to absorb a point of view that I had ignored while loved ones around me relished in it, was an oasis for my soul. Having been unwilling to investigate the cause of such a startling movement until now was ignorant. Move your cheese!!!! Break through the comfort barriers, you can handle it whatever it is. The earth is turning on its axis. Planets and moons and suns are in orbit. Gravity is pulling and tugging, and molecules and quarks are warring inside of us. We need movement to live…

Tonner Doll: New Bella and Edward Twilight Dolls

At $129, collectors will be sure not to drive a stake through these "Twilight" toys: "It's almost like having the star in your house."

He doesn't sparkle in the sunlight - he's plastic. He can't hunt for prey - he's immobile. And he's only 17 inches tall - not exactly a towering Byronic presence.

Still, for some fans of Stephenie Meyer's immensely popular Twilight series, the Edward Cullen doll by Tonner is the next best thing to the books' vampiric hero.

The high-end dollmaker, known for its realistic figures based on popular movie characters, saw sales hit a record high with its first Edward doll, released in 2009.

But next month at San Diego's Comic-Con, Tonner is set to introduce another Edward - and a new Bella Swan (Edward's human girlfriend) and an Alice Cullen (Edward's vampire sister). The company also sells a Jacob (Bella's werewolf best friend) and several villains from the first Twilight book.

Cindi Fallon, 53, of Media, owns an Edward and a Jacob and already has all three of the new dolls on order (they'll ship in August). She didn't start reading the books until after she bought her dolls - at first, she said, she was just drawn to their "sculpting and artwork."

"It's not a Barbie doll," she said. "It looks like a human being" - namely, actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

For its first Twilight series, Tonner produced nearly 5,000 mini-Edwards, with gray peacoats and shoes with working laces. Three months later, every doll had sold out.

Billy Burke Interview THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE

The latest installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, sees Bella and Charlie sharing some highly memorable, touching and funny father-daughter moments, which the actor said he really enjoyed filming. In this exclusive interview with Collider, Billy Burke talked about working with the talented Kristen Stewart, how he could never choose between Team Edward and Team Jacob, his thoughts on the baby in Breaking Dawn and how he’s looking forward to working with Bill Condon.

He also talked about his role in the upcoming 3-D action thriller Drive Angry, starring Nicolas Cage, in which he plays an over-the-top villain, who is the leader of a cult.

Question: What made you want to get involved with the Twilight films? Was there something about the story or the character that appealed to you?

Billy: I had no idea what Twilight was, at all. Catherine Hardwicke had seen a movie that I did a number of years ago, called Dill Scallion, and she requested to have me in. So, I came in and we talked a little bit about it, and we read a couple of scenes. In the movie sense, we both fell in love, at that moment. But, I just thought it was a really nice love story. I didn’t really pay attention to the whole vampire aspect, actually. It was a really nice love story, and a really great relationship between a father and his daughter. I didn’t really have a clue that the movie would have that much success, but I had an idea that it would do something.

At what point did you realize that it had become a huge phenomenon?

Billy: It started building when we were on the set in Portland, making the first film, and we were getting media attention and fans were hanging out. You never get fans hanging out on movie sets. It just never happens. So, I started realizing that something was bubbling up. And then, the first physical contact I had with it was at the first Twilight premiere, which was absolutely nuts. And then, it went on to make an astronomical opening weekend and, at that point, we all knew that it was something.

What do you think when you find out that people slept for days in tents, just to see you walk the red carpet at the premiere of the latest film?

Billy: God bless them! I’ve never been a fan of anything that would make me want to do that. But, it’s great. They’ve got a real passion and a real devotion to these stories and the characters, and that’s cool.

Since you hadn’t been familiar with what the Twilight saga was when you auditioned, was there a point that you read the books to get the background on your character, or did you just go with what was in the script?

Billy: It’s pretty wildly known by now, with all the interviews that I’ve done, that I’ve never cracked one of the books. I am not a big reader, to begin with. When I read the script, I realized how oblivious Charlie was to everything else that was going on around him. Everything that I really need to know is in the scripts. Everything else is information that I don’t want to bog myself down with. That way, the movies are fresh to me. When I see them for the first time, I’m getting entertained and I’m getting a surprise. I didn’t see Eclipse until everyone else did, at the premiere.

How has it been to work with Kristen Stewart? How has your relationship changed, since the first film?

Billy: It hasn’t changed very much at all, actually. We don’t hang out together in our personal lives, but whenever we get back up there on the set, it’s very comfortable. It’s like coming back to work on a TV show. Everybody knows each other and it’s very comfortable. I love working with Kristen. She’s extremely talented and she has the same work ethic that I do. She doesn’t carry a lot of baggage around with her to the set. She doesn’t do a lot of unnecessary and extraneous
preparation. We bring our ideas to the set and throw them out there and, so far, it’s worked really well.

One of the things that stands out about these films is the very real relationship between Bella and her father. Do you have a favorite scene between the two of you?

Billy: I remember working on the kitchen scene, where Charlie inadvertently tries to talk to her about sex and protection. That was actually quite fun. We had a good time with that.

Do you think that Charlie is more Team Jacob than Team Edward, when it comes to Bella, or do you think his feelings toward Edward are gradually changing, over the course of the films?

Billy: First of all, Charlie would never play that game. He would never play the team game, nor would I. I have no interest in that. But, he’s obviously got a bent towards Jacob. Jacob is the son of his best friend and he looks at him as a good kid who’s a clean, strong influence. He still doesn’t know that much about Edward, but obviously there’s something weird about him. Charlie would always bend towards Jacob.

Charlie seems to get a little upset, though, when he finds out that Jacob kissed Bella.

Billy: That would be with any kid kissing your daughter. That’s just the way it goes. My daughter is only two years old right now and I don’t look forward to those moments.
